One of the easiest, and most noticeable, ways to customize a car is by giving it new rims. While most people glance past stock wheels and rims, when their eyes catch something new and unexpected, such as a shiny set of chrome rims, it is hard not to notice and appreciate the custom modifications. With the wide selection of custom rims on the market, it is easy to find an aftermarket rim that calls to personal style.

Of course, even more eye-catching than normal custom rims are spinners, or spinning rims. Spinners have moving parts and sealed bearings in between the spokes and the tire rim itself. This makes it so when moving, a spinner has smooth movement and unique patterns from its rotation. However, the real draw of spinning rims is when the car or truck comes to a stop. The spinners keep on rotating, naturally drawing eyes from the unexpected movement. In fact, sometimes spinners can catch other drivers off guard, causing them to hit their brakes. This is because they see movement in the wheels out of the corner of their eyes, and assume the other car is still moving. Not only are chrome spinners noticeable and flashy, but they can literally stop other cars in their tracks.

There are two main types of spinners, those that can be attached to custom wheels, and those which are wheels in of themselves. Spinners that are attachments are frequently cheaper, and attach to a car's existing wheels with special lug nuts. However, this option is not for everybody, as the wheels should have a few inches of inset in which to house the spinning rims. Usually wheels for rear wheel drive cars have the inset to hold spinning rims. Cars with front wheel drive will generally not have a lip on the wheels, and so any attached spinning rims would stick out, possibly hitting the fender and becoming damaged or chipping the chrome. There are solutions, however, and some custom wheels with spinners built-in are specially made for front wheel drive cars.

Spinners come in a variety of sizes, from 18 inches and smaller to more than 24 inches. Generally, the largest size of rims for cars is 20 inches; any rims larger than 20 inches are usually meant for trucks instead. Usually if buying online, a site will have an online calculator that will be able to show exactly which rims will be able to fit on a particular model of car, 20 inch or otherwise, making it that much easier to buy spinners online.

Spinners have a wide variety of prices, anywhere from a few hundred dollars for attachable spinners to tens of thousands for high-end wheels with spinners. The only real way to get a good deal is to look online at many different sites. Some good places to start looking are spinning-rims.com and thewheelconnection.com, if just to find the right style of rim.

Spinners can provide flash and uniqueness to a car, or finish off a custom car's new look. No matter what the car, chrome spinners will draw eyes. There is just nothing quite like stepping out of a car and looking back, seeing the rims still turning.
